Description
The rich reds on Colter Peak in this photograph come from the warm sunset light passing through some thin smoke from a forest fire in Idaho. The volcanic rock which makes up Colter Peak saw much hotter temperatures when it was created tens of millions of years ago and might have glowed red from the heat within it at that time.
