Description
Specimen Ridge is the divide between the Yellowstone River and the lower Lamar River. Extensive fossil forests are preserved in the prehistoric volcanic ash and mud flows piled here. Cold-hardy lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir now grow on top of more than two hundred types of petrified trees, including subtropical species such as magnolia, maple, and avacado. The high, swirling snow blowing off his subalpine ridge illustrates how changeable and dynamic our earth is.
